Legacy Renewed: U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority’s Return to UP Manila

The U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority proudly announces the induction of Sis Hannah and Sis Samantha, both BA Developmental Studies students from University of the Philippines Manila, into our beloved sisterhood. Their Induction and Golden Book Signing Ceremony coincide with our 94th Founding Anniversary Celebration on 21 February 2026 at Club Filipino. Their presence marks a historic moment for U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority as we continue to expand our legacy of excellence, leadership, and service.

This milestone is especially meaningful because it reconnects U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority with the UP Manila campus in a renewed and significant way. The last time we had resident sisters studying in Manila was during an earlier era when Sigma Beta sisters were among the UP-PGH nursing students.

“The College of Nursing was still in Diliman, sa ibaba ng College of Law. Most of our subjects were contracted at the College of Medicine at PGH on Herran Street,” recalls Sis Jane Martinez, Σβ ’61.

At that time, the University of the Philippines College of Nursing was operating from the Diliman campus, with facilities located near the College of Law. Clinical and major subjects were held at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and at Philippine General Hospital along Padre Faura (formerly Herran Street), reflecting the close integration of academic instruction and hospital-based training even then.

The College of Nursing was formally established in April 1948, offering the first bachelor’s degree program in nursing in the Philippines. Initially based in Diliman, the College later relocated to Manila when the UP Health Sciences Center (now UP Manila) was organized in 1977, consolidating the health science units alongside PGH. As a result, a significant number of our Sigma Beta alumnae are proud graduates of the UP-PGH College of Nursing.

With Sis Hannah and Sis Samantha now residing and studying in UP Manila — not as a separate chapter, but as resident sisters of the Sorority’s mother home in University of the Philippines Diliman — we proudly herald a renewed presence in the heart of the UP system.

Founded on February 1, 1932, at UP Diliman and formally recognized by the University on February 14 of the same year, U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority has grown from its founding sisters — grounded in scholarship, service, and enduring friendship — into a dynamic sisterhood with chapters established across the UP System. The UP Los Baños Chapter was founded on August 15, 1955; the UP Visayas and UP Mindanao Chapters followed on February 3, 1997 and October 26, 1997, respectively; and the UP Baguio Chapter was established on September 11, 2004.

As we proudly welcome Batch 2026-I Primera de Faura — we celebrate not only the revival of UP Manila residency within our sisterhood, but also the deep historical ties between U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority and the Padre Faura campus.
