A simple yet meaningful ceremony was held on 10 March 2026 to recognize U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority for being the first organization to extend support to the EATSkolar Program, an initiative of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs that provides meals for students in need. The recognition highlighted the sorority’s early belief in the program.
According to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Carlo De Pano, the EATSkolar Program was launched with more faith than certainty. At the time of its inception, there was no dedicated funding and little clarity on how many scholars could ultimately be supported. Despite these uncertainties, the program moved forward with the hope that members of the university community would rally behind it.

That hope was realized when the U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority, led by its elder alumnae, stepped forward as the first organization to support the initiative—and has since remained one of its most consistent partners.

Vice Chancellor de Pano recalled a pivotal moment that helped set the program in motion. On a rainy day at Quezon Hall, Civil Service Commission Chair Sis Atty. Mai Barua-Yap, Sis Dr. Tess Payongayong, and Vice Chancellor de Pano met to discuss the possibility of supporting the EATSkolar Program. The meeting resulted in the very first donation to the program, given by the U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority—an act that signaled the beginning of a growing network of support for student scholars.
During the ceremony, Sis. Atty. Mai Barua-Yap reflected on the values that have guided the sorority’s long tradition of service. “Mahalin mo ang kapwa mo kasi kabahagi mo sila, kadugtong mo sila sa kaluluwa, sa puso, at sa katawan. Discover your oneness with your community and your awareness that there is a national community that needs you. Sigma Beta has been born on this kind of spirit, and we have survived… we are on our ninety-fifth year,” she shared.

Her message emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective responsibility—principles that have shaped the organization’s nearly century-long legacy. She also reiterated the sorority’s commitment to supporting initiatives that create meaningful impact. “We would like to be first in line, always, for causes that make a difference. We should all make a difference in the best way we can,” she added.
The ceremony also included the formal handing of another check in support of the EATSkolar Program, reaffirming the sorority’s continued partnership with the initiative. In addition, giveaways were distributed to the EATSkolar recipients present, adding a personal and celebratory moment that highlighted the program’s direct impact on the students it serves.

As the EATSkolar Program continues to grow, the early support of the U.P. Sigma Beta Sorority stands as a reminder of how community trust and initiative can help transform an uncertain idea into a lasting program of service. The recognition ceremony not only celebrated the sorority’s contribution but also underscored the power of collective action in uplifting the university community.
